The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance was formed in 2012 to remedy the problems users face with creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords.

The FIDO Alliance found the missing piece in the bridge to a password-free future as

  1.  A smartphone needs to be a roaming authenticator.
  2. ID bound to a particular device needs to be relocated.

The new capability will allow websites and apps to offer consistent, secure, and easy passwordless sign-ins to consumers across devices and platforms.
